Exponential Readership Growth for Métro Daily

Montreal, September 10, 2004. – Métro Montréal Newspaper has gained over 76,000 new readers a week since 2003. Total weekday readership for Métro now stands at 517,100, reaching an 18% Montreal audience with a higher-than-ever readership level. This is according to the most recent NADbank study (Newspaper Audience Databank) supplementary report, the baseline measurement for daily newspaper circulation.

Every day, Métro reaches 271,400 Montrealers, a gain of 66,900 readers or 32.7% over 2003.

Of these readers, 63% do not read other daily newspapers (The Gazette, La Presse, or Le Journal de Montréal). This exclusive Métro readership is young, educated and employed – a highly coveted target demographic for advertisers, and one that is hard for traditional daily newspapers to reach.

“That Montrealers are attracted and loyal to our daily newspaper is no longer in doubt. I am very pleased with the growth in our readership, all the more so since we have not increased our subscriptions over this period,” said Stéphane Gagné, Métro’s editor. He added: “This growth clearly demonstrates that the Métro is a quality product that does a great job of responding to the needs of the Montreal market.”

With 39 editions published across 16 countries in 15 languages, and 32 million readers around the globe, the Métro is arguably the largest free daily on the planet and the third largest newspaper worldwide. In Canada, it is distributed in both Montreal and Toronto. Métro Montréal partners with Métro International and the Transcontinental and Gesca press groups.
